Royal British Legion
New Stained Glass Window, St. Bartholomew’s Church, Corsham
The new window was created to celebrate 100 years of the Corsham branch of the Royal British Legion. The main idea behind the design was conceived by the chairman Mary Antill and her husband Arthur.
Their thought was to relate the window to the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall where poppies are dropped from the ceiling. In this case they are falling around the silhouette of a modern-day soldier as he patrols through a field, rifle at the ready.
At the base of the window are the blue and gold colours of the Legion. Unique, mouth-blown glass from English Antique Glass is used for the main area of the design.
The heraldic lion and inscription were installed to commemorate the diamond jubilee of the Legion in 1982. The rectangular inscription was originally much lower in the window but was moved to the top of the new panel so as to relate to the earlier work.
